Dismal Swamp Improvements
Feasibility Study, Site Improvements, and Bridge Preservation
In 1999, Alpha & Omega Group was selected by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources State Parks for the Civil and Structural Engineering of the floating swing-span bridge (Phase I, 1999-2006) and the Visitor Center (Phase II, 2006-2008). The Dismal Swamp Canal is on the National Historical Record.
A&O designed the 85-foot floating, barge swing-span bridge with two 15-foot bascule spans and a 36-foot two-span continuous fixed approach. Recently, NC State Parks asked A&O to assess the repairs needed, estimate the cost, and design improvements to the bridge, appurtenances, decking and the adjacent control houses.
The A&O team oversaw the refurbishment, including the disconnection of the bridge, and transport upstream to Chesapeake, Va. with approval of the U.S. Coast Guard. The bridge was set ashore, stripped, disassembled, cleaned, repainted and repaired before being floated back upstream and reconnected. Our site work around the control houses included new catch basins to control site drainage, new timber retaining wall, porous flexible pavers, concrete repair, geosynthetic soil-reinforced matting, and composite decking.
