Municipal Bridge Inspections
NBIS Inspection and Analysis
A&O has provided more than 2,000 bi-annual NBIS Inspection services for NCDOT Structures Management Unit since 2000 as a company, while our key staff has provided this service since 1984. As part of the bridge inspections, we also have inspected hundreds of pipe culverts, structural plate pipe arches, corrugated metal pipes, reinforced concrete pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts.
Routine safety inspections are provided using “hands-on” inspection techniques for each type of structure. Each structure is visually inspected from top to bottom, from one end to the other, recording deficiencies observed in each component of the structure. Photographs are taken to provide a visual record of noted conditions. The main elements of a structure are field-measured to verify dimensions and to document any changes that may have occurred since a previous inspection.
Load rating analysis may be performed, based on the inspection findings and the type of structure, to determine the structure’s capability of carrying legal vehicular traffic in North Carolina. Ω
