Fort Macon Coastal Education Center
Civil Site Design
In 2006, Alpha & Omega Group provided structural and civil design services for the 22,000 square-foot Coastal Education Center at the historic Fort Macon site in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.
The 22,000 square foot Coastal Education Center includes massive exposed timber roof trusses using reclaimed timbers, steel framing and masonry shear walls.
The civil aspects of the center include a 4,000 gallon rainwater reclamation cistern for irrigation, permeable paver walks, and grading limitations of 40-feet beyond building perimeter and 10-feet beyond walkways and utilities. Also, potable water and sanitary utilities were extended to the facility. Parking spaces for low-emission and fuel efficient vehicles were part of the LEED certification.
The Center was designed as a “green” building, ultimately achieving LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council. Ω
