Steel Truss Pedestrian Bridge Inspection
Jacksonville-Camp LeJeune Rails-to-Trails Greenway
The Jacksonville-Camp LeJeune Rails-to-Trails greenway bridge over NC Highway 24 is a pre-fabricated, steel truss, structure. The bridge cosists of a concrete deck on a steel truss with stay-in-place metal forms on concrete interior bents and piled end bents. As a "fracture critical" structure, a whole section, or even the whole bridge, is vulnerable if one member fails. Alpha & Omega Group performed an in-service field inspection and load rating analysis for the bridge in 2019, and prepared a report for the City of Jacksonville. We performed our services in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Maintenance Inspection for Bridges, and North Carolina Department of Transportation standard bridge inspection procedures.
A&O graded bridge elements in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration’s Recording and Coding Guide for Structure Inventory and Appraisal of the Nation’s Bridges. We prepared a report containing written descriptions of deficiencies observed, along with photographs and maintenance recommendations. Load rating compared the design load capacity to the current overall condition of the bridge.
A&O reported the bridge to be in good condition, able to carry the pedestrian load for which it was designed, as well as an occasional five-ton service vehicle.
