Prosperity Church Road
Permeable Pavement Design
Under an existing on-call agreement with the City of Charlotte, Alpha & Omega Group designed a permeable pavement section of bicycle lane as part of a road widening project along Prosperity Church Road. With the roadway widening already designed, the City’s goal was to tie sections of roadway together with a roundabout and to introduce the permeable pavement as a pilot project.
A&O performed hydraulic analysis with the use of permeable pavement to ensure appropriate storage and treatment of stormwater. We designed storm structures to tie into the City’s existing drainage system, while providing potential for future upgrade, if needed. We designed storage structures and permeable pavement to support traffic loading and provided details on plan sheets to be incorporated into the City’s plan set. A&O prepared an engineer’s cost estimate for construction.
After design was completed, the City discovered a 24-inch water line in the middle of the road, previously unknown, which would not allow the depth of the needed sand filter to be constructed for the project. The project was re-designed without the permeable pavement. Ω
