Wilmington Pedestrian Bridge
Structural engineering
As a subconsultant to Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., Alpha & Omega Group designed and prepared construction documents for a pedestrian timber boardwalk beneath an approach span of the Heide Trask Drawbridge in Wilmington, NC. The walkway connects to the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail and is a safety feature to prevent pedestrians and bicyclists from having to cross five lanes of traffic on the west side of the drawbridge.
A&O’s work included the structural design of approximately 192 linear feet of timber boardwalk, one timber octagonal overlook without cover and a two-span pre-stressed, pre-cast concrete bridge supported on reinforced concrete caps and micro piles.
A&O provided structural engineering, geometric layout, data collection and field investigation/reconnaissance for the design of the proposed structures. We consulted a geotechnical engineer for foundation recommendations for bridge and boardwalk loads, submitted general drawings for review and approval, and provided final construction documents for the timber boardwalk and concrete bridge. We also provided construction administration services to complete the bridge.
