EPA Breezeway Bridges
Condition Assessment
lpha & Omega Group provided professional engineering services to inspect and assess the structural condition of four pedestrian breezeway bridges located on the Environmental Protection Agency's campus in Research Triangle Park in Durham.
We began with a visual and in-depth inspection of the breezeway bridges to identify problem areas. We did a visual inspection of the cast-in-place concrete walkway and girders, the cast-in-place columns, and steel canopy of each breezeway, documenting the cracks, patches, delamination, and spalls found within each section. We used D-meter readings and calipers to determine the thickness and condition of steel. We determined the condition of concrete by using a Schmidt Swiss hammer and by sampling material from various locations in the walkways.
A&O presented the findings of the testing in a report that included recommendations for repairs and a cost estimate. Finally, we developed a maintenance program to prevent or minimize the amount of deterioration in the future. Ω
