St. Mark’s Episcopal Church
Structural Condition Assessment
Alpha & Omega Group provided structural services for a structural condition assessment of the historic St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Wilson, NC for the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina
St. Mark’s is the first black Episcopal Church in Wilson, having been founded in 1887. However, despite its historic importance to the Town, the church was experiencing the wear of frequent use. The building was suffering from outward deflection, cracking on the exterior walls and some localized crushing. The Dioceses realized that repairs would be necessary to preserve St. Mark’s for future generation. They required an assessment to determine the structural integrity of some parts of the building and provide plans for temporary shoring until repairs for the building were completed.
The A&O team preformed a preliminary assessment of the building and then conducted a more in-depth assessment of the location. During the preliminary assessment, the team visually assessed the building, documenting and photographing anything noteworthy. After that, the team reviewed both the primary structural and lateral load systems and analyzed the load baring capabilities of the different structural elements and established any necessary testing or special conditions. Afterwards, the A&O Team provided a verbal and written report on their findings during both the assessment and the analysis and included repair recommendations and an engineer’s estimate of probable cost.
