Alpha & Omega Group provided professional engineering services to inspect and to design repair plans to the high-hazard Cliffside Lake Dam on Skitty Creek in Macon County, North Carolina, for the US Forest Service. The 150-acre Skitty Creek watershed produces 1075 cubic feet per second during a 100-year flood event. The Skitty Creek watershed area is composed of two major tributary drainages upstream of the dam.

For the inspection, A&O reviewed the previous inspection reports, EAP, and other documents. We developed a written report detailing the condition of the dam, recording deficiencies. We further documented conditions with photographs. Removal of the concrete surfacing and loose, spalled or delaminated concrete enabled us to further investigate the origins of water seepage observed on the downstream face of the dam.

Upon the concrete surface removal, we designed crack repairs using non-toxic chemical and cementitious crack sealer to address water seepage throughout the face of the dam. Welded wire fabric was pinned to the structure to help reinforce the shotcrete repairs. Shotcrete was applied and troweled smooth at numerous repair locations. Stone masonry repointing was also recommended at each end of the dam that had water seepage as well.
