Culvert Extension Under NC 55
Structural and Civil Engineering
To provide access to a parking lot at the newly constructed Ting Park (previously known as North Main Athletic Park), the Town of Holly Springs needed to add turn lanes to the highway. As a subconsultant to WithersRavenel, Alpha & Omega Group designed an extension to an existing 10 x 5 - foot reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) to allow the road to be widened.
A&O reviewed the field survey measurements of the existing RCBC and fill over the top and the slopes. We reviewed the proposed roadway data for the fill needed for the extension, as well as the skew orientation of the existing structure and determined the required length of the extension. To design the extension, we developed engineering calculations and construction drawings.
Later, we were called upon to provide limited construction administration services for the construction of the culvert. Scope for CA included reviewing and responding to contractor RFIs. We reviewed contractor submittals and shop drawings for conformance to the design plans for the formwork and reinforcing; performed construction observation and reporting; and provided as-built record drawings reflecting changes made in RCBC submittals and shop drawings and changes as marked in red by the contractor on field plans.
