Underwood Avenue Culvert Repairs
Structural and Hydraulic Repairs
Alpha & Omega Group lead a team to provide engineering services to repair a reinforced concrete culvert on Underwood Avenue in Winston-Salem.
The culvert existed in two parts and was likely constructed sometime before 1950. The southern section is constructed similar to a bridge with tall vertical abutments and cast-in-place concrete beams integral with the deck. The northern section was a more conventional reinforced concrete box culvert (RBCB) approximately 5’x5’ with approximately 6-8 feet of fill over the culvert. After a structural conditioning assessment, where repairs were deemed necessary, A&O was authorized to design those repairs.
Alpha & Omega Group provided plans for repairs of slabs, spalled areas with exposed rebar, and masonry wings; grouting undermined footings; replacement of portions of the roadway and sidewalks; and the addition of two walls. They also submitted plans for traffic control, utility coordination, construction easements, and an estimate of cost. Once the bidding phase was complete, A&O provided construction administration for the project. Ω
