Alpha & Omega Group provided roadway, structural, and erosion control plans, specifications, and estimates for a 60-inch welded steel pipe culvert to supplement existing double 6x6 box culverts at the interchange of US-70 and Davis Mill Road in Johnston County.

NCDOT Division Four had improved the interchange with an exit ramp and additional lane, but after Hurricane Matthew in 2016, determined that additional conveyance under US-70 was needed to prevent flooding in the area. To prevent disruption of traffic, the new 60” diameter welded steel pipe culvert was installed with the bore and jack method. Construction was completed under the highway while maintaining traffic with no lane closures.

The structure design and plan included the removal of the upstream wingwall and the extension of upstream headwall with a new wingwall. The 60” diameter pipe was skewed from the existing double 6x6 RCBC to minimize stream impacts at the outlet of the culvert. A standard 60” endwall was used instead of modifying the existing outlet headwall and wingwall.

The A&O team provided project special provisions for structures, erosion control, and utility coordination. Ω
