Blue Jay Point Projects
Boardwalk, Playground Wall Replacement, Deck Replacement
Between 2010 and 2013, A&O provided Wake County Facilities Design and Construction with structural engineering services for Blue Jay Point, a 236-acre park located on the shores of Falls Lake in northern Wake County.
The park, known for its environmental education programs, was in need of replacing its playground wall, the lodge decking and railing, as well as building an elevated five-foot wide boardwalk over the existing asphalt trail to make it accessible to those with disabilities.
The scope of work for the playground included providing a topographic survey produced by our consultant, Sungate Design Group. A&O developed plans for replacing an existing timber retaining wall, replacing asphalt walkways with concrete sidewalks, replacing landscape timbers, and replacing a sand table. We provided plans for site drainage improvements and prepared technical specifications and a construction cost estimate, attended pre-bid and pre-construction meetings and performed site observation during the construction phase.
At the lodge, A&O was responsible for the design, removal and replacement, with composite material, of upper and lower levels of decking for the lodge, stairs, stringers, railings, and benches. Our scope included review of the existing documents and field-verifying the existing structure; preparation of plans for replacing the timber decks and rails; preparation of technical specifications and a cost estimate; attending pre-bid and pre-construction meetings; and site observation during construction.
For the boardwalk, A&O served as a consultant to Sungate Design Services of Raleigh. Scope of services included designing the timber decking, a galvanized picket railing, and an overlook with seating and a viewing area for visitors in wheelchairs. We developed schematic design and construction drawings and specifications showing the plan, profile, and details for the boardwalk and overlook. We developed an engineer's opinion of construction cost, assisted the County with bidding and award of contract, and provided construction administration. Ω
