Rumbling Bald Resort Bridge Replacements
Alpha & Omega Group provided professional services to replace two bridges at Rumbling Bald Resort in Lake Lure. After A&O performed routine bridge inspections and load rating analyses of three bridges at the resort, we initially designed repairs to Gateway Drive Bridge so it could serve as a detour bridge during the replacement of Quail Ridge Bridge. However, a severe storm washed out the Gateway Drive Bridge in September, 2018, necessitating the replacement of both bridges.
A&O managed the full scope of services that included surveying, geotechnical, structures, hydraulics, environmental permitting, erosion control, utility coordination, cost estimates, specifications, and construction administration including material testing.
Because of the storm, an emergency replacement resulting in bridge plans being developed in approximately 60 days was required. Within 30 days, we developed the 45-ft cored slab bridge configuration, with quantities, so that the contractor could include both bridge replacements in their contract.
The Quail Ridge Bridge replacement consists of a single-span, cored slab bridge spanning 55 feet across Trout Stream. A 27-foot wide bridge has a sidewalk on one side and a modified one-bar metal rail. As part of the utility coordination, Duke Energy relocated power off of the bridge. Ω
